“All Human Beings are Born Free and in Equal Dignity and Rights.” As rightly stated in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human beings should always be treated as one and as equals by their fellow beings. The Model United Nations represents those exact qualities and how the UN goes about working on them to maintain peace and unity.
A few weeks back, on the 29th of October 2018, Dubai Scholars held its first MUN workshop to give a heads up of how an MUN setting is and how it works. We had three different committees that were in session with their committee topics; Human Rights Council (HRC), General Assembly First Committee (GA1) and lastly the Security Council. The topics were as follows;
The protection of Migrants, Disarmament and International Security and Threats to International Peace caused by terrorist attacks respectively.

I, Alicia Kunte of year 10, was a part of the General Assembly First Committee. The chair and co-chair of the committee were Rayyan Abassi from A Levels and Lamya Butt from year 10-C, the volunteer present during the session was Nirav Kewlani from A Levels. We discussed about how disarmament is important to maintain peace between nations. The committee came up with two resolutions, one of which was passed and the other which was tabled. The resolutions included negotiations with different countries on disarming their weapons and facts and figures of what levels are they ready to disarm at to come to equal grounds.
“I personally enjoyed this session that took place. It really helped me move out of my comfort zone to go around, talk to and learn to make negotiations with people. This experience has also helped me improve on my public speaking skills as well as the way I deliver my points and speeches.” - Alicia Kunte (year 10-B)

countries are going to work with their governments in helping solve the social crisis that might occur
in their sovereignty.
“I feel like it was a good experience for people like me who have never attended an MUN conference
before. It made me understand what it was all about and the do’s and don’ts while in a committee
session.”- Zainab Mustali (year 9)

All in all, taking into consideration the experiences of each delegate, its safe to say that the DSMUN
Workshop wasn’t just a great learning experience, but also a quite enthusiastic and interactive
experience. The workshop really helped the students to move out of their comfort zones to be able
to create common grounds, to come to resolutions which can be of good help when it comes to the
application of these abilities in our everyday lives, not just as students, but also once we grow up to
be adults.
